The ability to make spontaneous connections between ideas is what brainstorming
is all about!
Secret weapon #1
- 'Free Association'
Making such instantaneous connections is called 'Free Association'. This is
a fascinating phenomenon. It lies at the heart of truly creative thinking and
therefore brainstorming.
Free association means that:
- Each idea leads straight to the next - no pauses for thought or examination!
- There is no predetermined order - ideas should flow randomly and without any
attempt to organise a structure for them!
If you stop to think about every idea as it arrives, you will be slamming the
brakes on your brainstorming session. Ultimately this will restrict your output.
Once you stop and assign a meaning to an idea - for example, by thinking "that's
what it means" - it can be difficult to 'unlearn' that assigned meaning...
immediate analysis of ideas whilst brainstorming is therefore the sworn enemy
of free association!
Remember: the best brainstorming sessions generate many ideas - not just a
few highly detailed ones!
Secret weapon #2
- 'Iterative Enhancement'
Besides free association, there is another secret weapon that should be built-into
any good brainstorming system: 'Iterative Enhancement'.
While this might well sound complicated, it is actually a very simple concept
indeed...
Anybody experienced in creative thinking will tell you that it is extremely
difficult to generate all of the potential ideas possible in one go. It's always
wise to repeat the creative process a few times to conjure up even more ideas.
Each time you repeat brainstorm - each separate attempt or go at it - can be
called an iteration. Each iteration improves or enhances the previous
result... and so we get 'Iterative Enhancement'. Simple!
>>> The next section reveals a special five-step brainstorming
system, that automatically employs iterative enhancement, to explode your creativity!
